EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Workers who are responsible for applying pesticides in and around public buildings can learn how to meet compliance regulations mandated under Michigan law through a new program being offered by the Michigan State University (MSU) Pesticide Safety Education Program (PSEP).
The program, called the IPM Academy, will provide instruction in integrated pest management (IPM) so workers can meet the requirements of Michigan Regulation 637, Rule 14, which states that anyone who applies pesticides, including ready-to-use, general-use pesticides, in schools, daycare centers, public buildings and healthcare facilities must be trained in IPM. The regulation applies to both certified and non-certified pesticide applicators.
Each participant who successfully completes the class will receive a certificate from the Michigan Department of Agriculture (MDA) designating him/her an IPM technician qualified to apply general-use, ready-to-use pesticides in public facilities. Certified applicators may also obtain recertification credits for taking the class.
The first class offered in the program will be “IPM Technician Training for Indoor Pests,” which will take place March 12 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the MSU Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education in East Lansing. Workers who are responsible for pest management in schools, daycares, healthcare facilities and other public buildings are encouraged to attend.
The class will feature the following speakers: Chuck Baker, Tri-County Pest Control; Ellen Baron, Michigan Department of Corrections; Tony Bohnert, Terminix, Inc.; Bruce Donald, University of Michigan; and Larry Swain, MDA.
The registration fee, which includes materials, snacks and a box lunch, is $80 before March 5 and $100 after that date. Registration is limited to 50 people.
