EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Cows may not be the first thing a person thinks of when signing up for summer camp, but that’s all about to change. Dairy Youth Cow Camp is a series of one-day “summer camp” workshops to be held across the state in May and June to introduce young people to and educate them about dairy cattle.
Though the camp is geared toward 9- to 13-year-olds, youth of any age are invited to participate. The only qualification is that participants are interested in learning about dairy cattle and the dairy industry.
Three workshops are scheduled: May 17 at the Tuscola County Fairgrounds, 362 Green St., Caro; June 11 at the Calhoun County Fairgrounds, 720 Fair St., Marshall; and June 12 at the Kent County Fairgrounds, 225 S. Hudson St., Lowell. Each event begins with registration from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. and concludes by 6 p.m.
Participants will be divided into groups and rotate between learning stations where they will be introduced to a variety of topics, including dairy breeds, dairy products, fitting and showmanship, dairy judging, identifying feedstuffs and the basics of dairy animal nutrition. The event ends with a game of “Moo Olympics” and an ice cream social.
The $5 per participant registration fee includes lunch and is due one week prior to the event. Checks should be made payable to Michigan State University.
To register, contact Joe Domecq, MSU Extension dairy youth specialist, at domecqjo@msu.edu or 517-353-7855, or Renee McCauley, Michigan 4-H dairy youth program assistant, at nugentre@msu.edu or 616-283-6411, or visit http://www.canr.msu.edu/anscikids/dairy.html.
