EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State University Upper Peninsula Experiment Station (UPES) will conduct a summer field day at the Chatham, Mich., location July 26.

The event will include updates on current research on switch grass, wheat, falcate alfalfa, foliar fertility of alfalfa, feeding protected amino acids to lactating dairy cattle and weaning beef calves without stress.  There will be demonstrations of small-scale, on-farm biofuel processing and no-till pasture improvement.  Presentations on various opportunities for marketing beef calves in the fall will take place in the afternoon.

The keynote speaker is Don Koivisto, director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture (MDA). He will provide an MDA update and discuss his views on the role of agriculture in Michigan’s green economy.

Koivisto was born and reared in the western Upper Peninsula and graduated from Central Michigan University in 1971.   He was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 1980, where he served three terms and was chair of the House Agriculture Committee from 1984 to 1986.
