EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Plant and garden lovers won’t want to miss Michigan State University (MSU) Garden Day, Aug. 8 at the Wharton Center and the Plant and Soil Sciences Building. The event, from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., will feature two guest speakers and a selection of workshops brimming with new ideas and practical tips.
Writer, photographer and long-time plant container designer Rita Randolph will offer a morning keynote address featuring putting foliage first in containers, from simple to elaborate. She’ll share photographs of containers from her greenhouses as well as other gardens and botanic gardens and will leave you with some tips and tricks for creating eye-appealing containers.
Her family’s operation, Randolph’s Greenhouses, is located near Jackson, Tenn., and is a popular destination for gardeners of all ilks. Randolph is past president of the Tennessee Flower Growers Association and is a member of the Garden Writers Association and numerous horticultural societies.
Rick Luke, owner of Luke Landscape, will deliver an afternoon keynote on designing water gardens. Luke is a landscape designer with more than 20 years of experience, and his team specializes in all types of hardscapes, landscapes and water features.
Twelve one-hour workshops will focus on topics such as storybook gardens, growing herbal gifts, sensible landscape maintenance, landscape lighting, edible landscaping, native plant rescue, organic gardening and tackling tough lawn problems. Participants can also choose to take a behind-the-scenes tour of the MSU Horticulture Gardens with longtime manager Doug Badgero.
The Garden Day Marketplace offers participants the chance to purchase plants and supplies so they can put what they learn to use at home right away.
Master Gardeners can earn five credit hours for participating in Garden Day.
The Garden Day registration fee is $75 before July 25 and $85 after that date. Registration includes two workshops, keynote speakers, parking and lunch.
