What:  The 11th annual Great Dairy Adventure consumer education day

• Volunteers representing the state’s dairy industry use exhibits, hands-on activities and crafts and games to creatively illustrate the process that milk takes from the cow on the farm to the family table.
• Participating in these various activities and sampling healthy, refreshing dairy treats help children and consumers more readily make the connection between cows on the farm and the dairy products they purchase from grocery store coolers.

When: Wednesday, July 22 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Who:   Children of all ages, parents, educators, summer camps and daycare providers will attend. More than 3,000 people attended in 2008.

Why:   The event offers a one-on-one opportunity to meet Michigan dairy producers, learn more about Michigan’s No. 1 agricultural commodity, and discover how consuming at least three servings of dairy foods a day contributes to a nutritious, healthy and balanced diet.

How:   Participants can take their turn

• milking a cow by hand;
• petting calves;
• experimenting with dairy recipes, creating crafts and playing games;
• tasting free dairy treats, including string cheese, ice cream and milk;
• visiting one-on-one with MSU large animal veterinary students;
• posing for milk mustache photos with MSU athletes;
• tweeting their favorite experiences at the “Ag Goes High Tech” booth.
