EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Farmers can learn about the benefits of building healthy, well-balanced soil with organic amendments at a two-day workshop set for Aug. 14 and 15 at Morgan Composting in Sears, Mich.

“Building Soil for Better Quality Food Workshop” will run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. both days and will feature educational presentations by researchers and farmers, a tour of the composting facility, educational, product and equipment displays and a demonstration of equipment.

Presentations on Aug. 14 will focus on producing quality field crops from well balanced soil and on Aug. 15, the focus will be on nutrient-dense vegetable production.

Guest speaker Paul Hepperly, a research director from the Rodale Institute, has extensive expertise in organic and conventional agriculture. He will be discussing the “Soil Quality -- Food Quality Tie.”

In addition to educational booths, there will be field demonstrations of equipment for both row crops and vegetables. The equipment will be demonstrated both days of the workshop and representatives from equipment dealers will be on hand to discuss their features.

Lunch will also be available both days; the food provided will be supplied from local producers.

Participants may attend one or both days. The one-day registration is $40 prior to Aug. 10 and $50 after that date. The two-day registration rate is $60 before Aug. 10 and $70 after that date. Registration includes educational materials and lunch.
