EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michael Jones, professor and research scientist with the Partnership for Ecosystem Research and Management, has been named chairperson of the Michigan State University (MSU) Department of Fisheries and Wildlife. His appointment became effective June 1, 2009, following a national search.

Jones succeeds William Taylor, who has returned to his faculty position as University Distinguished Professor of Global Fisheries Systems in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife and also continues as associate director of Michigan Sea Grant.

“I look forward to continuing our work together as Dr. Jones guides the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife in partnership with colleagues and organizations both on and off campus to address the global challenges that threaten the sustainability of our ecosystems,” said Jeffrey D. Armstrong, dean of the MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Jones has been a member of the MSU Department of Fisheries and Wildlife since 1997 and has been serving as acting chair of the department since February 2008. He also serves as co-director of the Quantitative Fisheries Center. He has worked closely with fisheries management agencies in research focused on understanding fish population dynamics and applying quantitative tools to practical fishery management problems. Previously, he was a research scientist with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, where he led the Great Lakes Salmonid Unit, and was a systems ecologist with ESSA Technologies Ltd. In 2007, he served as a visiting scientist with CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, and was a visiting professor with the University of British Columbia Fisheries Centre during fall 2006.

Jones is a member of the International Association for Great Lakes Research, the Board of Technical Experts of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission and the American Fisheries Society. He received the 2004 Great Lakes Fishery Commission Vern Applegate Award for outstanding contributions to sea lamprey control and was recognized in 2007 with the Anderson-Everett Award for important and continued contributions to the International Association for Great Lakes Research.

“I am thrilled to have been given the opportunity to lead our great department into an even greater future for fisheries and wildlife at MSU,” said Jones.

Jones received both his bachelor’s degree and doctoral degree in zoology from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
