Clinton County Teams Dominate Novice Division, Ottawa and Allegan Take Junior, Senior Divisions in 4-H Dairy Days Quiz Bowl at Michigan Dairy Expo

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Dairy quiz bowl kicked off a weeklong schedule of competitions and activities at 4-H Dairy Days held July 20-23 in conjunction with the 13th annual Michigan Dairy Expo on the campus of Michigan State University (MSU).
           
Five teams competed in each of the contest’s three divisions: novice, junior and senior. This year marked the first year for the novice division.
           
4-H Dairy Days is the youth-centered portion of Michigan Dairy Expo, the largest annual dairy event in the state. It offers young people interested in the dairy industry opportunities to compete for premiums, ribbons and scholarships in various activities, including dairy quiz bowls, dairy management contests, dairy cattle judging, showmanship and a youth show. Winners may also be selected to go on to represent Michigan in national competitions.
           
Clinton County boasted the top three placings in the novice division. Clinton A team members were Vincent Warncke, Allison Schafer, Cameron Cook and Carmen Hicks. Teammates on the second place Clinton B team were Claire Mandley, Forrest and Jessica Nash, and Leah Batora. Clinton C finished third with team members Abigail Butcher, Hallie Neller, Miriah Dershem and Cheyenne Jakus.
           
In the junior division, the winning team was from Ottawa County. Team members were Kelly Raterink, Chelsea Barnes, Hayleigh Geurink, Samantha Dekkinga and Dustin Tripp. The Allegan A team of Shelby and Heather Berens, Cole Wixom and Isaac Elzinga finished second. The third place team was from Ingham County and consisted of teammates Lucas Moser, Anna Musolf and Kailey Sweers.
           
The winning team in the senior division was Allegan A. Team members were Tim Elzinga, Jennie Lubers, C.J. Berens and Marshall Wixom. The Allegan B team finished in second place with team members Allie Elzinga, Megan Jagar, Sara Rottier and Catrin Steffens. The team from Washtenaw/Ingham placed third; team members were Ethan Breuninger, Shawn Chamberlain, and Enoch and Mitch Carpenter.
           
This year’s Michigan Dairy Expo took place July 20-24. It drew more than 400 dairy animals and more than 200 exhibitors. To download photos or results from any of the week’s activities, visit www.michigandairyexpo.com.
           
The mission of Michigan Dairy Expo is to encourage and promote youth involvement in dairy activities, showcase the Michigan dairy industry, and provide continuing education opportunities for the dairy industry in Michigan and neighboring states.
           
All Michigan Dairy Expo activities took place at the state-of-the-art MSU Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education, which was funded by the Animal Agriculture Initiative (AAI) at MSU. Established in 1996 as part of the grass-roots-driven Revitalization of Animal Agriculture in Michigan Initiative, the AAI is a partnership between MSU, livestock producers and industry organizations, and the Michigan Department of Agriculture to address challenges facing Michigan animal-based agriculture through research and Extension projects.
