EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The GRAND Learning Network (GLN) invites teachers, educators and volunteers to four evenings of the Fishing for the Future of Our Great Lakes Workshop. The workshop will be held Sept. 15, 17, 22 and 24 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Holt High School (5885 Holt Rd., Holt, Mich. 48842).

The workshop will offer activities in aquatic ecology, people and fish management, tackle crafting and actual angling skills. Participants will leave with curriculum activities, equipment (including a fishing rod and reel) and access to supplies and resources to begin a successful fishing program/club with children in the classroom or in an after-school setting.

“It’ll teach teachers how to get kids out of the classroom and make their community a learning environment as well,” said educational program coordinator Mark Stephens.

The cost for the workshop is $55. Teachers within the Holt, Haslett, Lansing, Laingsburg and Bath school districts can attend for free compliments of the GLN. Space is limited to 25 participants.

“This workshop is available to anyone; you don’t have to be a teacher,” said Stephens. “We would like people from the community there as well.”

The workshop is partially funded through Michigan State University (MSU) Extension, grants and donors to Project FISH.

For questions, contact Stephens at steph143@msu.edu or 517-432-2700. Registration and further information is available at www.projectfish.org/fishingforthefuture09.pdf. Registration deadline is Sept. 10.

GLN is coordinated through the MSU Department of Community, Agriculture, Recreation and Resource Studies. It is part of the Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative, funded by the Great Lakes Fishery Trust.
