EAST LANSING, Mich. -- More than 1,000 Michigan State University alumni, friends and family members will gather in what has been called “MSU’s largest tailgate party” -- AutumnFest 2006.

AutumnFest takes place Saturday in the Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education beginning at 8:30 a.m., 3 ½ hours before the kickoff of the football game between the MSU Spartans and the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

AutumnFest is a harvest celebration of agriculture and natural resources at MSU hosted by the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Alumni Association. The annual event, in its 31st year, is open to the public and will offer food, entertainment, a lively auction and raffles, and visits by MSU mascot Sparty, MSU cheerleaders and the Spartan Marching Band.

“AutumnFest is a great event, and it’s a major fund-raiser for the ANR Alumni Association’s scholarship fund,” said Kathryn Reed, assistant director for alumni relations and special events.  “Every year we raise thousands of dollars for student scholarships through the AutumnFest auction and raffles. This year, we’re including a silent auction to add to the fun.”

More than $8,000 worth of goods have been donated for the AutumnFest auctions and raffles, including a one-week vacation in a condominium on St. Kitts Island (including airfare); 2007 MSU football tickets in the CANR suite; four premium Detroit Tigers tickets for the 2007 season; a charter fishing trip on the Great Lakes; a hog roast tailgate party for 50; quality compost; autographed MSU sports equipment; hotel stays; golf outings; gift baskets donated by Michigan commodity groups; and handcrafted items, including custom-made end tables and fine quilts.

AutumnFest features information and free samples of Michigan-grown products at the booths of Michigan’s agricultural and natural resources industries and organizations. Informative booths from units affiliated with the college also line the walls, and student booths offer information and items for sale to fund their group activities. A sure crowd-pleaser will be the Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station (MAES) booth with an on-site oxygen bar featuring 12 aromas -- chocolate-covered cherries, pumpkin pie, apple pie and many others -- all based on MAES agricultural and horticultural research.

AutumnFest will take place in the exhibit area of the pavilion, located on Farm Lane south of  Mt. Hope Road in East Lansing.  Tickets are $25 at the door for adults, $10 for children 6 to 12 years of age and free for children 5 and under. A shuttle bus to and from the football game is available for $3 per person. For information, call the ANR alumni office at 517-355-0284.
